Chapter · 3:00-4:16

Why auxiliaries create global naval reach

A warship projects force across the world, while auxiliaries and merchant shipping provide the supplies and transport that let it remain there.

Notes

Warships need merchant shipping and auxiliaries to sustain operations, including independently operating surface raiders. Britain's Royal Fleet Auxiliary provides dedicated naval support, but the Falklands War showed that combat operations required more shipping than that organization alone could provide. A merchant marine and a wider network of supporting ships are essential for sustained operations far from home. In 1939, Admiral Graf Spee carried combat power into the South Atlantic, while Altmark provided the supplies that made the deployment possible. A navy's global reach depends on its ability to keep that force supplied throughout the campaign.
