Automation can shrink crews without shrinking ships

The Efficient Ship example shows a long history of automation without establishing a minimum viable crew.

Question

Could electronic-warfare advances and automation produce minimally crewed warships that remain relatively small?

Short answer

Sensors and automation have long been used to reduce crewing, but required capabilities still impose a limit; no minimum crew or hull size is given here.

Notes

The Efficient Ship project used sensors and automated systems to replace some human tasks. Alex Clarke identifies his father's involvement as the basis for this example. Lower crewing remains limited by the capabilities a ship must provide. It does not give a minimum crew figure or a design for a small automated warship.
