Why Australia must bring usable capability to an alliance

Allied help is most credible when Australia can make a meaningful contribution to its own defence and to a combined force.

Notes

Australia cannot independently cover every requirement created by its geography and population, so it depends on allies. That dependence is not a case for doing less. Forces that can defend Australian approaches and contribute scarce capability to a combined task group make the country a net alliance asset. Demonstrating that willingness and utility strengthens both the operational value and political credibility of allied assistance in a crisis.
