Aurora and the Arethusa-class cruiser balance

HMS Aurora becomes a case study in light-cruiser balance and in Agnew's authority as Force K's task-group commander.

Notes

The Arethusa class appears here as a particularly successful balance at the light end of the cruiser spectrum. Proposed improvements would lengthen the hull and replace the four-inch battery with twin 4.5-inch mounts, adding stronger general-purpose fire without abandoning the basic design. These are refinements to an already strong light-cruiser concept rather than reasons to replace it with the later Dido class. Aurora was both Agnew's own ship and Force K flagship, allowing him to direct the task force before his formal rank fully caught up with the responsibility.
