August 1941 U-boat map

The 14 August 1941 deployment map sets roughly 40 U-boats against the Atlantic's scale and accelerating Allied production.

Notes

A map for 14 August 1941 shows German U-boats near the Bay of Biscay and south of the Greenland-Iceland-UK gap. The symbols look concentrated at map scale, but each boat could observe only a tiny part of the ocean around it. Germany had about 40 submarines at sea at points that year and lost roughly six during August, even as the campaign sank merchant tonnage. Britain and the wider Allied war effort were adding capacity in Canada, India, Australia, and New Zealand. With American policy moving from lend-lease toward direct entry, Germany's search problem was becoming harder while Allied production accelerated.
