Why Pacific distance transformed amphibious logistics

The short Channel crossing and the distances of Pacific island hopping demanded different landing ships and mobile support.

Notes

European amphibious operations took place relatively close to major ports, repair yards, and industrial support. Many small craft could cross from Britain to France under their own power, although rough seas made a carried approach preferable. Pacific operations faced far greater distances between industrial bases and landing zones, with campaign objectives spread across an oceanic theatre. Landing ship docks, repair ships, and other mobile support became more important because the fleet had to carry much of its sustaining infrastructure forward. An amphibious force suited to the Atlantic could not simply be transferred unchanged to the island-hopping war.
