The Azores as an Atlantic strategic hinge

Atlantic Linchpin explains why the Azores mattered to aviation, replenishment, diplomacy and sovereignty in two world wars.

Notes

Guy Warner's book fills a gap in English-language Atlantic history. It incorporates Portuguese naval-aviation research alongside accounts of patrol aircraft, U-boats, trawlers and replenishment. The Portuguese perspective makes the islands more than an Allied convenience: neutrality and sovereignty created a delicate diplomatic problem for every major power. Geography, basing access, and Portuguese choices all shaped the Battle of the Atlantic.
