Asashio's quoted cruising range was 5,700 nautical miles at 15 knots, with a maximum speed of about 35 knots. At 34 knots, the stated range fell to 960 nautical miles, about one sixth of the cruising figure. That steep reduction limited the endurance available for sustained high-speed operations. Steam-turbine reliability and rudder faults also required repairs. Stern and rudder modifications, together with turbine adjustments, had addressed these problems as far as possible by 1941.
