Named for Mount Asama, the cruiser began at Elswick as a speculative venture because the yard understood Japan's requirements well enough to anticipate an order. Japan recognized that the developing hull suited its needs and bought it. Asama was launched on 18 March 1898, completed on 18 March 1899, and left for Japan the following day. The episode joins speculative export construction to a rapid delivery schedule for a fleet expansion already under way.
