Asahi grounded during sea trials, damaging bottom plating that had to be repaired before departure. She sailed for Japan one day after the post-trial work and modifications were completed. Reaching Yokosuka on 23 October 1900 moved her from a British-built acquisition into Japanese fleet service. She became flagship of the Standing Fleet on 22 May 1901. When the Combined Fleet was re-formed in December 1903, Asahi entered the First Battleship Division of the First Fleet, placing her in the formation that would fight the Russo-Japanese War.
