The outnumbered defenders would be better served by holding a defensive position, and they have placed obstacles that threaten cavalry. Artillery offers a tempting target that can draw them out. The plan is to have the guns in position before the enemy attacks and then spring a trap, but the defenders reach the artillery too soon. Even so, the lure makes them leave the hill. In the simulated engagement, avoiding an uphill attack comes at the cost of exposing the guns before the trap is ready.

Drawing infantry downhill with exposed artillery
An attempt to lure defenders off a hill shows both the attraction of artillery as bait and the risk of mistiming the trap.
