Will armor return to modern warships?
Short answerPossibly as localized armored survival pods that protect crews and essential controls rather than the whole ship.
NotesDesigners could protect a compact command-and-survival citadel instead of armoring the entire hull. The concept resembles the protected crew spaces used in some target-ship conversions, where local armor preserved the people needed to control the vessel. After severe damage, the crew would retreat there and retain essential command and machinery controls. Such a citadel would preserve enough capability to fight the casualty and bring the ship home even after other combat systems failed.
