Adding weight to the central belt and main deck improves the simulated ship's pitch and roll, but it can also push the design over its displacement limit. Reducing draught or thinning protection solves some problems while creating others. Turret, barbette, bulkhead, and anti-flooding protection then compete for the remaining weight. Armour is more than one thickness figure because its location interacts with hull form, stability, and the rest of the design budget.

Armour distribution affects stability as well as protection
The design review uses belt and deck weight to show why a warship's protection scheme also influences pitch, roll, and displacement.
