Argonaut links shipyard safety, discipline, and wartime conversion

Argonaut survived a yard fire through deliberate building separation, acquired a notorious discipline culture in China, and later shifted through several wartime roles.

Notes

A fire at Fairfield threatened Argonaut while she was still under construction, but the yard's policy of separating workshops from ships kept the hull safe. The incident makes physical yard layout part of shipbuilding risk control rather than mere convenience. On the China Station, Captain George Cherry issued roughly 600 punishment warrants and inspired officers and senior ratings to create a satirical medal for those who survived the commission. Its anchor, fleece, dragon, cherry tree, and group portrait turned a harsh discipline culture into an unusually tangible artefact of shipboard morale. In wartime Argonaut captured a German merchant ship and could carry 354 mines. Later conversion into a hospital ship and then an accommodation ship again demonstrated the adaptability of the large hull.
