The proposed attack approached from several directions. General Belgrano and two modified Allen M. Sumner-class destroyers formed one group; three Drummond-class corvettes formed another; and the carrier Veinticinco de Mayo with Type 42 escorts could launch eight Skyhawks. British planners considered both a surface action group against Belgrano and a Harrier strike while submarines shadowed the larger formations. Before the amphibious force arrived, the British carriers retained room to manoeuvre, but a coordinated missile and air attack could still disable a carrier or sink an escort.
