Why the Arethusa class was valued for survival and close waters

The Arethusa class's compact design and compartmentalization supported resilience, while small size was thought to reduce its likelihood of selection as an aircraft target.

Notes

The class combined compact dimensions with structural features influenced by destroyers. Although it lost ships in combat, the design put destroyer toughness into a cruiser built to survive damage. Its compartmentalization may have been among the best fitted to contemporary cruisers. Small size was also thought to make the ships less likely to be selected as targets by enemy aircraft. These qualities suited VIP transport and fighting in confined waters. Their association with aggressive destroyer flotillas may partly reflect that suitability for close waters.
