Archerfish chooses shallow hits to destabilize Shinano

Archerfish's ten-foot depth setting shows how torpedo aim could target a carrier's stability as well as its machinery and compartments.

Notes

Archerfish set six torpedoes to run at ten feet before firing into Shinano's path. American reasoning favored holes high enough in the hull to admit water above the lowest spaces and exert greater leverage on the ship's metacentric stability, increasing the risk of capsize. Four weapons hit at an average depth of about fourteen feet, indicating a deeper spread than the nominal setting but validating the choice of a shallow setting for this target. The fire-control settings therefore connect directly to naval architecture, since underwater hits at different depths do not have equivalent effects.
