Apollo class balanced fleet screening and commerce protection

Apollo-class cruisers combined chase guns and broad 4.7-inch coverage for both trade protection and defense against torpedo craft.

Notes

Their all-round quick-firing battery allowed the ships to engage threats from several bearings and rapidly bring more weapons to bear. That made the class useful against commerce raiders and in fleet actions against torpedo boats and early torpedo-boat destroyers. The design joined six-inch chase guns to broad 4.7-inch coverage instead of concentrating on one narrow tactical problem. This balance gave the class its versatility.
