Anson's depleted crews: care, prize money, and naval discipline

Anson's practical care for sick sailors and handling of prize-money expectations show the personnel problems behind a long-distance raiding expedition.

Notes

Anson and his officers worked beside the crews to bring damaged ships into the anchorage and help invalids ashore. Raiding then produced prizes, but some sailors expected an immediate cash distribution like that associated with buccaneers. Anson explained that an Act of Parliament protected their shares and made concessions to address dissatisfaction. A further Pacific crossing left Centurion alone because the other ships could no longer be crewed and maintained. At Tinian, officers again helped sick men ashore, where fresh food and water restored many survivors.
