Ansaldo grew from railway manufacturing and repair into a large mechanical and shipbuilding concern with seven factories and roughly 10,000 workers. Its naval work included the battleship Giulio Cesare and the conversion of Aquila into an aircraft carrier. The company also built HMS Arno, one of the last foreign-built warships to serve in the Royal Navy. State intervention helped Ansaldo survive interwar financial pressure before its later consolidation under Italy's industrial groups. Three of the four Giussanos came from this industrial system.
