The interwar British labels placed the role before the words landing craft, producing names such as Assault Landing Craft and Mechanised Landing Craft. Joint Anglo-American terminology during the Second World War reversed that order. Assault Landing Craft became Landing Craft Assault, while Mechanised Landing Craft became Landing Craft Mechanised. This change in terminology explains why accounts of a design's development can use different names for its type.
