What was the main difference between the Andrea Doria and Conte di Cavour classes?
Short answerAndrea Doria kept the thirteen-gun concept but carried more armor and reached about 23 knots instead of 21.5.
NotesAndrea Doria retained thirteen 12-inch guns and carried sixteen 6-inch guns. Compared with Conte di Cavour, the main changes were heavier armor and a rise in top speed from about 21.5 to 23 knots. The class was an incremental refinement of Italy's compact, heavily armed Mediterranean battleships. Like the Cavours, the Andrea Dorias later underwent extensive reconstruction. Dante Alighieri remained slightly faster at 23.8 knots.
