Amphibious ships complement rather than replace US carriers

Amphibious aviation groups handle many crises, but their limits clarify when a full carrier battle group is needed as a stronger deterrent.

Notes

American amphibious task groups already combine a wide range of aviation and other capabilities. Their limitations can therefore clarify when a fleet carrier is required. If the amphibious group cannot handle a crisis, a carrier battle group offers a further increase in combat power. In this interpretation, operating capable LHDs and LHAs reinforces the case for fleet carriers within the same force.
