Should Britain have bought an amphibious Centauro-type vehicle for the Royal Marines?
Short answerSeveral brigades could instead use a common amphibious 8×8 family with variants for many roles.
NotesThe preferred alternative is to buy the US Marine Corps' amphibious 8x8 platform and adapt it for British requirements. The proposal equips one Royal Marine brigade and two Army brigades with a common vehicle family. Personnel carriers, medical and command vehicles, fire-support weapons, and anti-tank missiles would share the platform, while Ajax would go to cavalry units. In this proposed force, the vehicles' own amphibious movement would also provide an alternative if the Channel Tunnel were unavailable.
