Why stored ammunition and mines outlast old hulls

Ammunition and mines can remain useful for decades when stored in controlled conditions, making them more plausible reserves than entire warships.

Notes

Robust munitions differ from ships that require continuous maintenance, crews, and dockyard support. Mines are designed to survive salt water and can last when stored dry at a stable temperature, while artillery ammunition remains useful when its components are safely managed. This durability does not extend to every weapon: a later exchange warns that complex torpedoes can become dangerous when maintenance and long-term storage fail. A useful reserve is an inspected stockpile in suitable conditions, with each weapon maintained according to its needs.
