American concentration and Yorktown's 72-hour repair

Yorktown's 72-hour repair aimed at three to four weeks of service while Nimitz assembled the carriers, submarines, aircraft, and support vessels available for Midway.

Notes

American planning was comparatively direct: reinforce Midway and strike the Japanese at an unexpected time and place. Japan's earlier attack on the island had already advertised Midway as a possible target, while decrypted messages and traffic analysis confirmed the renewed threat. Yorktown needed repairs sufficient for roughly three to four weeks of operations, with fuller work at Puget Sound planned afterward. Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard met that immediate requirement in 72 hours, while Spruance and Fletcher took the available carrier forces to sea. Nimitz also deployed submarine patrol groups and filled Midway with every usable aircraft and support asset, including obsolete Brewster Buffalo fighters, seaplane tenders, patrol craft, and fleet tugs. The Americans concentrated nearly every usable resource around one defensive purpose despite their limited means.
