Why France used American carrier-training facilities

American instrumented training areas helped France develop its newer carrier air group, while a British Falklands proposal illustrates how sea conditions can overturn apparent savings.

Notes

Operating Charles de Gaulle required different experience from operating Foch and Clemenceau. French air groups therefore spent time training with the Americans during the 2000s to reach the desired operating standards. American facilities offered extensive areas, sensors, and systems for exercising carrier operations and attacks against carriers. A British proposal to create a comparable training area around the Falklands had appeared inexpensive. The objection was the wear and expense that South Atlantic conditions would impose on the ships using it.
