Altmark was the tanker and replenishment hub that allowed Admiral Graf Spee to sustain her South Atlantic cruise. She carried fuel and stores, supported repairs, and received prisoners taken from merchant ships. Her merchant crew was not originally organized for naval support or a prison mission, and naval personnel and weapons were added only after she met Graf Spee. The nearly 300 captured sailors were valuable to Britain's merchant service, but their loss could not cripple it. Parading them through Germany would nevertheless have given the Nazi regime a propaganda success after Graf Spee's loss, with images of British captivity circulating around the world. In this interpretation, Graf Spee's cruise placed greater weight on psychological impact than on the sustained destruction of shipping needed for a decisive economic result. Altmark's prisoners offered a way to continue that effort after the raider was gone.
