Alternate history as evidence-based scenario analysis

A disciplined counterfactual combines political, economic, social, technological, and strategic evidence to test which factors made the historical outcome possible.

Notes

Alternate history can work as bounded scenario analysis. The method assembles political, economic, social, technological, and geostrategic evidence into a range of plausible outcomes. Comparing the Agadir Crisis with the July Crisis identifies a meaningful variable: earlier Anglo-French attention allowed financial pressure and a limited naval signal to work in 1911. Changing that timing in 1914 tests how much the actual escalation depended on distracted governments without assuming every later event remains fixed. The alternative also makes the causal weight of real institutions and decisions easier to see.
