Almirante Latorre was acquired by Britain during the First World War and served as HMS Canada before returning to Chile. Her sister hull Cochrane followed a completely different path, becoming the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle. Latorre carried ten 14-inch guns and underwent a major British modernization around 1929-1931 before spending much of the 1930s in reserve. The design belonged to the Chilean-Argentine naval race and commemorated a Chilean admiral from the War of the Pacific. The two hulls demonstrate how wartime acquisition could redirect foreign contracts into sharply different battleship and carrier careers.
