Allied Type 26 frigates are reinforcement, not a substitute

Norwegian Type 26 frigates can strengthen North Atlantic anti-submarine warfare, but they cannot safely be counted as replacements for Britain's own eight-ship force.

Notes

The 2025 Atlantic plan makes Type 26 anti-submarine frigates a cornerstone while Britain is buying only eight. The acquisition arrangement is criticized for diverting ships being built for the Royal Navy to Norway and delaying British procurement. Norwegian acquisition of the design creates valuable interoperability and may provide reinforcement when national priorities align. Norway must retain the freedom to answer its own crises, change its force size, or follow a future government's policy. A sound British plan therefore counts allied ships as additional help rather than using them to fill a sovereign force-generation requirement that Britain has chosen not to fund.
