Fighting as allies would let Britain and Germany study each other's industrial methods after decades of separation. The RAF's Hispano cannon suffered from freezing, while German designers mounted cannon through the center of an engine. Spitfire and Hurricane requirements already anticipated wing cannon, but fitting and heating them demanded practical redesign rather than a new idea. Combat experience and technical exchange could therefore change development priorities as quickly as formal specifications did.
