Frigates and destroyers as cruiser variants

Small fleets make nearly every major escort perform the endurance and presence work once associated with cruisers.

Notes

Modern labels often describe specialization: frigates lean toward anti-submarine work and destroyers toward air defence, while both still conduct independent deployments and presence missions. Because peace is more common than war, endurance, affordability, and diplomatic utility shape everyday fleet value. By this functional definition, many contemporary escorts can be understood as specialized cruiser variants. A navy with few large hulls cannot reserve presence work for a separately named cruiser force, so its principal escorts must be able to cruise by default.
