All-forward guns and the Jutland torpedo problem

Pre-treaty concepts behind the G3, M3, and Nelson layouts suggest how forward-firing main batteries might support a charge into a torpedo attack.

Notes

The hypothetical layout connects with earlier British interest in concentrating guns forward, later visible in the G3, M3, and treaty-constrained Nelson designs. An all-forward battery could let a battleship keep firing while turning towards an opponent and narrowing its profile to incoming torpedoes. Pre-war advice could favour turning towards a torpedo attack, with the bow wave perhaps disturbing an incoming weapon while the ship closes the enemy. The Jutland example is explicitly speculative, but it shows how turret placement can shape manoeuvre choices as well as broadside weight.
