Chapter ยท 1:25:18-1:29:13

Alexander Ramsay advised naval aviation without a sea command

Royal status constrained Ramsay's deployment, while his carrier experience remained valuable to wartime aviation development.

Notes

Alexander Ramsay had commanded HMS Furious, led the carrier force, and served as Fifth Sea Lord, but his marriage into the royal family complicated assigning him to exposed convoy service. Although he repeatedly sought a sea command, he did not receive one. He instead advised on naval aviation and helped fill the experience gap left by Reginald Henderson's death. His 1942 retirement reflects a mismatch between available posts, political constraints, and useful expertise rather than incapacity.
