Defeats at Austerlitz and Friedland preceded Alexander I's agreement with Napoleon at Tilsit. Russia joined the Continental System and went to war against Britain and Sweden, then broke with Napoleon over Poland. The eventual failure of Napoleon's invasion let Alexander claim a triumph, although Borodino could still look like a Russian defeat when judged by battlefield losses. Russia gained territory in Finland and Poland. Alexander then formed the Holy Alliance to suppress revolutionary movements he regarded as threats to Christian monarchs.
