Åland's ice crossing threatens Stockholm

Russian troops crossed the ice through Åland, but negotiations halted the offensive before a final peace settlement.

Notes

Russia planned a three-pronged attack to force Sweden to accept peace, enter the Continental System, and surrender Finland. Frozen water allowed troops to advance through Åland toward Stockholm, while Swedish forces withdrew across the ice. The opposing strengths are given as about 6,000 Swedes and 17,000 Russians. Despite that advantage, the main Russian force stopped on the islands while a small cavalry force continued as a demonstration. Negotiations produced the Convention of Åland on 21 March, ending the immediate offensive on terms considered relatively favourable to Sweden and against Alexander I's wishes.
