Range, payload, and the limits of Akron's air group

Akron's headline range and five-aircraft design capacity conceal practical limits imposed by wind, hangar geometry, and the size of the aircraft embarked.

Notes

The specifications give Akron a theoretical 9,190-nautical-mile range at 43 knots, but a headwind could sharply reduce her useful reach. Her hangar was designed for five small aircraft, yet a misplaced structural beam blocked two parking positions and larger trainers consumed still more space. This constraint illustrates a broader carrier principle: equal hangar dimensions do not produce equal air-group counts when one ship embarks compact fighters and another carries larger multi-seat aircraft. Eight engines provided a theoretical total of 4,480 horsepower, with a maximum speed of 73 knots.
