Akron searched for destroyers sailing toward Guantanamo Bay and eventually located the Omaha-class cruiser USS Raleigh with twelve destroyers despite difficult weather. The destroyers had sighted the airship before she found them. This was a qualified success because the test established the basic ability to search, identify, and report. The airship carried no parasite aircraft, so the exercise tested only the prerequisite beneath the intended reconnaissance system rather than a complete operational mission. The result proves neither wartime effectiveness nor failure. Its value lay in showing that the programme could proceed to more demanding experiments.

What a qualified scouting success meant
An early search exercise found and identified a cruiser-destroyer force, proving a necessary baseline without yet demonstrating a full wartime airborne-carrier mission.
