Akron's qualified success in a difficult search exercise

Akron recovered from an unsuccessful first search to find two ship groups in poor weather without parasite scouts or radio direction finding.

Notes

Poor weather frustrated Akron's first search on 10 January 1932, and destroyers saw the airship without being detected in return. The next day Akron located the light cruiser Raleigh and 12 destroyers before finding a second group of ships. The exercise was judged a qualified success despite the initial failure. Akron had no parasite scouts or radio direction-finding equipment, so the useful comparison is with the reconnaissance aircraft available in 1932 rather than later wartime machines.
