Akizuki introduces gallium-nitride active electronically scanned array radar in place of the gallium-arsenide technology commonly used before it. Smaller, more powerful panels reduce the size and weight of the supporting structure high in the ship. The radar choice therefore affects the destroyer's top weight as well as its sensors. Manufacturing gallium-nitride components is more complex and energy-intensive, although growing production is improving efficiency and understanding of the process.
