Airmobile artillery solves an old targeting problem

H-19s rapidly relocate rocket batteries threatened by counter-battery fire, showing how military solutions can reappear when an old problem returns in new form.

Notes

Rocket launchers produced conspicuous dust clouds, so they had to move frequently. H-19s could carry four launchers and additional rockets externally while transporting their crews in the cabin, allowing a battery to displace quickly after firing. The lift solved the whole tactical problem because it moved the weapons, reloads, and operators together. This Korean War practice resembles modern proposals for moving artillery away from unmanned-aircraft observation. Useful methods can disappear when a mission loses funding, then return when the same operational pressure reappears.
