Radar power requirements constrain drone size

The E-2D's generators illustrate why a powerful airborne radar cannot simply be transferred to a small drone.

Notes

The E-2D generator figures quoted are 340 kVA in normal operation and up to 255 kVA from an individual generator. The spoken unit is corrected from kilovolts to kilovolt-amperes, with another participant explaining why power factor matters when comparing apparent power with watts. These are figures used to illustrate the scale of the electrical system, rather than a measurement of the radar's own consumption. Generators and their fuel impose weight and volume requirements even when a drone has no crew. Copper cabling adds another weight penalty, making sensor power a constraint on how small the aircraft can be.
