Air-defence design must survive maintenance and battle damage

Type 052C air defence illustrates the difference between an elegant mechanism and a combat system with enough maintainability and redundancy to keep fighting.

Notes

The HHQ-9 revolver launcher is an engineering design whose rotating mechanism imposes an unwelcome maintenance burden. The close-in defence also raises a separate question about surviving failures. With only two Type 730 mounts, losing one is estimated to leave roughly 90 to 120 degrees uncovered. A third reduces the gap, while the preferred four-mount arrangement would preserve full coverage after one failure. The preference draws on the repeated wartime addition of light weapons to engage threats that penetrate the outer defences. Maintenance demands and the geometry of surviving weapons therefore matter alongside the nominal weapons fit.
