Fighters cannot by themselves cover every approach used by drones and missiles against an air base. The proposed ground defence combines guns, short-range missiles and a longer-range system comparable to Patriot. Different layers would address threats that reach the base from different directions. Buying advanced aircraft therefore leaves a separate requirement to protect the places where they operate.
