Why consider 18-inch guns for the unbuilt Agincourt?

A proposed connection between British 18-inch gun development and Agincourt's cancellation supports one interpretation of her intended armament.

Notes

Clarke favors twin 18-inch turrets for Agincourt as an inference from British gun development and the ship's cancellation. He argues that the 18-inch guns later used on Furious originated in a battleship requirement, and treats the unbuilt sixth Queen Elizabeth as the likely intended recipient. The stated technological reason for cancellation is another part of that interpretation, especially because the yard had already built Queen Elizabeth. Enlarging a twin turret also appears a plausible development path from earlier British heavy guns. British industry already had experience with triple turrets for export, however, so triple 15-inch mounts remained within its capabilities. Later K2 and M2 studies provide examples of twin-18-inch arrangements, but drawing a design does not prove an intention to build it.
