Renown's turrets inform the debate over the proposed Agincourt

The absence of triple 15-inch turrets from Renown and Repulse supports an 18-inch interpretation of the proposed Queen Elizabeth-class Agincourt.

Notes

The proposed Agincourt's armament is disputed: Clarke favours 18-inch guns, while Drachinifel has sometimes favoured triple turrets. The case for 18-inch guns rests on the view that an available triple 15-inch design would have been used in Renown and Repulse. Work intended for twin turrets could, in this interpretation, have been modified and the triple mounts completed quickly enough, especially while they were effectively the only turrets under construction. The Royal Navy wanted at least eight or nine heavy guns and regarded six 15-inch guns as only just sufficient for a battlecruiser. The later ships' actual armament therefore provides an indirect argument about which earlier turret design was available.
