Why an age of sail ship could lose its bow and keep fighting

The projecting bow of an age of sail hull was often less structurally integral than the bow of a modern destroyer.

Notes

Age of sail hulls often treated the projecting bow as additional structure attached to the main hull. Losing that projection therefore did less structural damage than losing the bow of a modern destroyer. A similar arrangement on the Tribal class might have simplified reconstruction after repeated bow losses. Different structural arrangements explain why visually similar damage can have different consequences.
