The newer AG600 is a possible successor to the Harbin SH-5 in China's large-flying-boat fleet. Published figures give it a range of about 2,400 nautical miles and endurance of twelve hours, both lower than the SH-5 figures quoted earlier and treated with similar caution. One suggested reason for procuring the aircraft is to sustain China's island network, including positions being built in the South China Sea and prospective acquisitions in the East China Sea. This is an interpretation of its potential role. A long-range seaplane could move people and supplies quickly between dispersed positions with less dependence on island aviation infrastructure.
