In the expanded-carrier scenario, eight AEW helicopters and up to 48 Sea Harriers could keep two radar helicopters and twelve fighters airborne. The proposed fighter screen divides into four aircraft forward, four over the carrier force, and four over the amphibious group. Earlier warning could also permit carrier positions on the continental side of the islands. Helicopter radar would watch for low-flying attackers, while aircraft climbing higher would become visible to Type 42 pickets. Argentine pilots could still score successes against exposed ships, especially the pickets. The denser screen could nevertheless stop more attacks before they reached the islands and make interception of Hercules resupply flights more effective.
